Help with greek vine leaves

Not sure if this is the right place to post.

I am making, well attempting to make some Dolmades/Koupepia/Greek vine leaves

I bought vine leaves in the jar and have had them soaking in water and salt but they have a distinctive seaweed smell to them.

Is this normal or have the spoiled?
