Where is the best place to find basic recipes?

Hi there, I'm trying to learn to cook in my spare time at home. I'm picking up more or less random things here and there from the grocery store since I've never learned how to cook. I also don't have a working oven atm. I bought chicken thighs and have a pretty random assortment of spices and other things. Then I realize I have no idea what to do D:.

I'm looking for a place to find recipes for beginners. I'm also not exactly sure what else I'm asking for since I'm very clueless. if anyone has some tips or can direct me elsewhere I'd really appreciate it

I have about 2.5lbs of cooked ham, lightly glazed. I'm thinking of wrapping it in my thanksgiving leftover mashed potato, then breadcrumb, and frying the potato crusted ham balls.

Will this work? Anyone has tips to improve it? Thanks!

Classic recipes that ask for both olive oil and butter?

High quality butter mixed with olive oil strikes me as a very good combination. I believe it comes up as a mix in Italian cooking, but I'm not sure where. Can someone come up with any classic recipes that call for both olive oil and butter?

If you're Italian: do you use olive oil with butter for your food? I don't necessarily mean butter that's been premixed with olive oil, just eg if you're frying or cooking, you put both in, rather than the one or the other.

Thanks!

Peanut-Crusted Chicken Sandwich with Oven-Roasted Tomatoes and Green Goddess Sauce

Peanut-Crusted Chicken Sandwich with Oven-Roasted Tomatoes and Green Goddess Sauce

Oven-Roasted Tomatoes

3 to 4 large plum tomatoes 1 tbsp (15 mL) olive oil 1 clove garlic, minced 1 tsp (5 mL) very finely chopped fresh thyme Salt and freshly ground pepper

Green Goddess Sauce

¼ cup (50 mL) mayonnaise ¼ cup (50 mL) sour cream ½ tsp (2 mL) lemon zest 1 tsp (5 mL) anchovy paste 1/8 tsp (0.5 mL) freshly ground black pepper 1/3 cup (75 mL) finely chopped fresh parsley ¼ cup (50 mL) finely snipped chives or green onion

4 small-to-medium skinless, boneless chicken breasts ¾ cup (175 mL) salted roasted blanched peanuts 1½ cups (375 mL) fine fresh bread crumbs 2 tbsp (25 mL) finely chopped fresh parsley ¼ cup (50 mL) flour 1 egg, lightly beaten 3 to 4 tbsp (45 to 60 mL) peanut oil 2 ripe but firm avocados 4 rolls such as whole-grain ciabata or Kaiser or short-sub 4 leaves lettuce ¼ tsp (1 mL) salt Grindings of black pepper

Adjust oven rack to above centre; preheat oven to 475°F (240°C).

Cut tomatoes crosswise into ½-inch (1-cm) slices. Lay in a single layer on parchment-paper-covered baking sheet or one coated with nonstick spray. Mix olive oil with garlic and thyme. Drizzle over tomatoes; lightly season with salt and pepper. Roast for 20 to 25 minutes or until tomatoes are slightly browned. Cool on a rack. (If making ahead, store in a covered container and refrigerate for up to several days.)

To make sauce, stir mayonnaise with sour cream in a small bowl. Stir in lemon zest, anchovy, salt and pepper until well-mixed. Then stir in parsley and chives. (Cover and refrigerate for up to 2 days.)

Place chicken breasts between 2 sheets of plastic wrap. Using flat side of a meat pounder, flatten to ½-inch (1-cm) thick or slightly less. Finely chop peanuts by pulsing a few times in a food processor. Combine peanuts, bread crumbs and parsley on a shallow plate. Season flour with salt and pepper on another plate; and on a third plate pour egg. Lightly coat chicken with flour; then dip into egg. Finally place in crumb mixture, firmly patting so crumbs adhere. (If making ahead, promptly cover and refrigerate chicken for up to half a day.) Discard remaining crumbs, flour and egg.

When ready to serve, heat 2 tbsp (25 mL) oil in a large frying pan over medium heat. (Oil aids in browning and keeps nuts from burning, so don’t skimp!) Add chicken; reduce heat to medium-low. Slowly brown, adding more oil when turning. Cook for a total of 12 to 15 minutes or until cooked through and crusty on both sides. Drain briefly on a paper towel.

Meanwhile, slice avocados; open rolls horizontally. On bottom halves, layer lettuce with slices of avocado and roasted tomatoes. Top with a good dollop of Green Goddess Sauce. Add hot chicken; serve right away. (If any avocado remains, mash in bottom of a serving bowl; stir in any remaining Green Goddess Sauce. Pass as a dip for crudités such as radishes, baby carrots and snow peas.)

Pickle Sandwich

1 pickle
1 piece of bread
Mayonnaise
Mustard
Garlic powder
Ketchup - optional

Spread mayo on the bread and then put the pickle in the center as if it were a hotdog. Squirt ketchup and mustard on and put garlic powder over that. Fold and eat like a hotdog.

I just ate a couple of these bad boys and poured some Salad Toppins in my mouth too. Really complimentary flavours. The best part was that I didn't need to dirty any dishes. I used the pickle to scoop mayo out the jar and the ketchup and mustard are in squeeze bottles! The mayo lid is wide enough to work as a small plate!

[REQUEST] Rice rolled meat recipe?

I was in Japan last January and a street stall was selling a dish called 'rice rolled meat'. If I remember correctly, it was simple and it seemed to be rice which had been wrapped in pork strips, glazed in soy sauce and put on a skewer. The thing is, I can't remember if I recall that correctly. And I don't know if it's any more or less complicated to make than I imagine. I searched google for a while looking for it but I could only find pork wrapped in rice paper and nothing similar to the actual dish. If anyone who has had it before or knows a recipe could help me, that would be great. Thanks!

Perfect Yellow Layer Cake Recipe

Testing, Testing 1, 2, 3

I am a mad scientist when it comes to testing out new recipes and perfecting old ones. In the beginning of my culinary journey I had a blank slate. I collected a few recipes here and there but none of them were what I considered the “tried and true” recipes that I so desired. I started out testing the basics, chocolate chip cookies, buttermilk pancakes, vanilla pound cake and the infamous yellow cake with chocolate frosting. Who knew there were so many variations out there for a single recipe. Do you want a thin and crispy cookie, a cakey one, or perhaps a crispy on the outside, chewy on the inside version. Truly I had no idea where to start. I’d look at a recipe and say to myself, “this looks like a good one” only to find out that it wasn’t good at all. Over time I began to develop an eye for what I considered a good recipe, basically by creating my own. I realized that I liked oatmeal cookies that were made with majority brown sugar creating a soft, chewy texture and a delicious caramel taste. I added a little sour cream, buttermilk or heavy cream to my pound cakes to give them the added moisture that I love and you can’t forget about cooking it slow and low to achieve that delicious flaky crust on the top, which is a key characteristic of pound cakes I grew up eating. My recipe repertoire has grown over the years and I think I have a pretty good collection. The recipe that I’m still trying to “perfect” is a yellow layer cake. I have yet to create one that has all the characteristics I’m looking for, one that’s moist and has a tighter crumb than the typical white cake. Of course you could open a box of cake mix and make that but, I want to make one from scratch. I will continue on working in my lab..I mean my kitchen, ever ready to create, to be inspired, and to learn. What recipes have you perfected and what recipes are you still in pursuit of? I’d love to know your thoughts on the matter!

Recipes for Sweet Potatoes?

So, last weekend my wife and I had a fancy dinner for our anniversary and the main course was filet with a medley of vegetables and mushrooms over a sweet potato puree'. It was really good and got us thinking about trying out some other sweet potato recipes but all I can really find is the standard bake them in a sweet sauce and cover them with marshmallows.

Does anyone have any other good recipes that maybe incorporates some other items? They are very healthy and we would like to add it to our mix.

Thanks

Cooking for ten, 2,000 miles away, in a kitchen I've never seen?

Hey all,

In a couple weeks, my fiancée and I are flying out to Colorado to meet her family for a ski trip. The couples have all agreed to cook one night for everyone, which is great......except I have no idea what will be available to me in terms of equipment and space. Does anybody have any great ideas for what I could serve that won't take all day to cook, will probably be easy to pull off in any environment, and won't seem out of place to serve my future in-laws for dinner?

Thanks in advance!

Does anybody have any great ideas for what I could serve that won't take all day to cook, will probably be easy to pull off in any environment, and won't seem out of place to serve my future in-laws for dinner?

Thanks in advance!

What can I make in a Vitamix blender that justifies the extra cost? (PS- the Vitamix 5200 is on sale on Amazon for Cyber Monday)

So the Vitamix 5200 in on sale now for under $300 on Amazon. And while my family does need a new blender, why should I splurge on the Vitamix as opposed to buying a much cheaper blender? Other than making nut butters, what can the Vitamix do that most other blenders cannot?

Plain Queso Blanco Recipe?

After visiting several different Mexican restaurants, most f the food I order is topped with some kind of queso blanco sauce. Its very thick, rich tasting, and sometimes even a little stretchy (possibly Velveeta?) After digging on the internet, I've found nothing that comes near a plain queso blanco recipe. Can anybody help me with this?

First time making curry help.

Found an easy recipe for curry I wanna try. One thing I'm curious is that there's a bunch of different combinations of tomato sauces and pastes or creams and yogurts and milks. The recipe I'm looking at calls for some tomato sauce and heavy whipping cream. However I have tomato paste, plain Greek yogurt and regular milk. Could I essential substitute the tomato sauce and heavy whipping cream for tomato paste and Greek yogurt? Any help is welcome. Thanks!!

Thanksgiving leftover sandwiches recipes?

I've been looking through some on other websites. Almost all have cranberry sauce in them (which I don't like), hence why they're leftover sandwiches, I suppose, because cranberry sauce is terrible. Anyways, does anyone have any sort of sandwich that they really love to make from leftovers, particularly turkey? I made a 22lb bird this year and have about 2lbs of leftovers.

Restaurant Style, Chicken Fried Rice

1-2 lb cubed Chicken (substitute pork, shrimp/scallops, or steak)

4-5 cups cooked rice

6-8 eggs

1 cup diced or roughly chopped mushrooms

¼ onion, diced

1 ½ sticks butter

half cup Sake

1 teaspoon rice vinegar

½ cup soy Sauce

1 tsp MSG

½ tsp salt

½ tsp sugar

¼ cup green onion or chive slices (more mild)

½ tsp minced garlic, bottled or fresh

Before dicing chicken, marinate in chicken broth over night to remove any gaminess

Eggs: Medium heat. Melt half stick of butter in large wok/pan. Break in all eggs. Break yolks. (optional: add pinch of sugar) Gently stir with wooden spatula while scraping bottom of pan. Repeat occasionally, giving time for large curds to form. Stir more frequently when most of the egg is cooked, and removed from heat before fully dry. Set aside. Wipe remaining egg off pan with paper towel to lightly clean.

Medium high heat. Melt half stick of butter. Add diced onion and mushrooms. Add ½ tsp salt, ½ tsp sugar, and ½ tsp of msg. Stir to distribute and heat veges. When mushrooms have released enough liquid to cover bottom of wok, lower the heat to a simmer. Stirring occasionally, let veges simmer for about 15 minutes, or until most the liquid has evaporated and onions are soft. Add 1 tsp soy sauce, 1 tsp sake, and 1tsp rice vinegar. Mix.

Increase heat to medium high. Add chicken to pan and mix to coat. Cook off the excess liquid so that the chicken can be browned. Let chicken sit for a bit to brown, and stir occasionally. Add a splash of Sake as needed if pan gets too hot/smokey. Turn off heat when chicken is fully cooked through, remove contents from pan. Set aside. If chicken is not fully cooked through, but is sufficiently browned, you can microwave it to completion.

Medium high heat. Melt half stick of butter to pan. Add minced garlic and stir. Fold in steamed rice. Coat the rice so that it’s all shiny and coated with butter. Add a few pats of butter if necessary. Fold occasionally, allowing some of the rice to brown lightly. If rice becomes too dry, add splash of sake.

Dump in remaining soysauce. Fold rice to distribute. Stir in chicken, eggs, and green onion/chives. Sprinkle ½ tsp of msg across the pan. Fold the entire mixture until the rice has been evenly brown from the sauces. Remove from heat and serve. If refrigerated: Because it’s with butter, this fried rice will become more bland when chilled must be reheated for full flavor.

Mandarin & Almond Cake

Citrus cakes are a favourite in our house. They are usually very moist and typically the oranges or lemons that are added are bursting with flavour and provide a great alternative to chocolate and buttercream type cakes. This is an extremely simple and easy to make citrus cake, this time using mandarins. Using just 4 ingredients, this is a really easy citrus cake to make. The mandarins are initially boiled then pureed. Add in almond meal, eggs and caster sugar and you get one of the most moist cakes you will ever taste that is simply bursting with citrus flavour. It doesn’t get much simpler for a fantastic cake that will also satisfy those looking for a gluten free dessert.

Ingredients:
• 3 large Mandarins I used Imperial mandarins
• 6 Eggs
• 1 cup Caster Sugar
• 2 cups Almond Meal

Instructions:
1. Place mandarins (skin on) in a saucepan and cover with water.
2. Bring to boil then reduce heat and simmer for 1 hour.
3. Remove from saucepan and allow to cool completely
4. Grease and line a 21cm - 22cm (9 inch) round springform baking pan.
5. Pre-heat a fan forced oven to 160°C (320°F).
6. Peel and remove seeds from mandarin.
7. Place mandarin pieces and skin into a small food processor and puree until smooth.
8. In a large bowl, add eggs & caster sugar and using an electric mixer beat for about 5 minutes to fully combine.
9. Add mandarin puree and almond meal and using a spatula fold through the egg mixture.
10. Pour mixture into baking pan and cook in over for about 60 - 65 minutes or until a skewer inserted into the centre of the cake comes out clean.
11. Remove from oven and let cool in pan for about 10 minutes before turning out onto a wire rack to cool completely.
12. Dust with icing sugar and garnish with additional mandarin pieces before serving.

Your favorite/family recipe!

Hi all,

I always find that you get the best recipes from family and friends that share recipes. I’m getting married in 2018, and I’d like to build a nice recipe book of great recipes for myself and I thought it’d be nice to share with all.

I’ll start by sharing my tried and true pumpkin roll recipe!!!

Roll Ingredients:

  • 3 eggs
  • 1 cup of sugar
  • 1 1/2 tsp. cinnamon
  • 1/2 tsp. nutmeg
  • 1/2 tsp. salt
  • 2/3 cup pumpkin
  • 1 tsp. baking soda
  • 3/4 cup flour Filling Ingredients:
  • 2 tbsp. softened butter
  • 1 block of softened cream cheese
  • 3/4 tsp. vanilla
  • 1 cup powered sugar

Directions:

Put on some festive holiday music. Jenna asked me if I wanted Sinatra Christmas, Bing Crosby, or Soft Rock Christmas. "Jenna", I sighed, "You had me at Sinatra."

Preheat oven to 375 degrees (if your oven is usually pretty strong (like Jenna's) you may need to lower the temperature to 360 degrees.

Butter your jelly roll pan (or cookie sheet with edges).

Mix together the roll ingredients.

Pour into the pan and spread evenly. It's going to seem thin, but don't worry it rises and spreads out.

Bake for 12-15 minutes.

With a spatula loosen the edges and do the best you can to be sure the bottom is detached from the pan.

Make a clean (lint free) dish towel wet and squeeze out the extra water. Lay it on the table.

With care, flip the pan so that the cake falls onto the towel. Roll up the cake into the towel.

Let cool about 20-25 minutes.

Mix up the filling ingredients.

Unwrap the towel and spread filling evenly over the cake.

As tightly as you can, roll the cake (without the towel this time) up.

Place (seam down) into a sheet of tin foil and tightly wrap it.

Cool in refrigerator for at least 8 hours before eating.

Need help with my chocolate chip cookie recipe

Made a batch of chocolate chip cookies yesterday. Texture was on point, soft chewy middle, crisp edges, but they didn't spread out very nicely, more cookie in the middle.

There are chocolate chips in them I swear. I just ate the more chocolatey ones first

Recipe:

1 stick of room temperature butter (soft but held its shape, plopped in the mixer)

1.25 cups all purpose flour

1/2 cup brown sugar

1/2 cup white sugar

3/4 tspn baking soda

1 teaspoon vanilla

1/2 tablespoon coffee

1 cold egg

1 cup semi sweet chocolate chips

1/2 tspn kosher salt

Baked at 350F for 7 minutes, then rotated pan and baked for 9 minutes. I forgot to grab some parchment so I put foil UNDER the pan. Pan was placed in lower 1/3 of oven. I did let the batter hang out in the fridge for two hours to marinade. I scooped cold batter onto the pan with a cookie scoop. It made 20 cookies.

Not sure if I put too much baking soda, or if the dough was too cold, but they just didn't spread as evenly as I wished for. They were still really tasty and my neighbors loved them.

Any advice on where I went wrong?

The best dish that I ever made (recipe)

Spiced fish with tahini/yogurt/lemon sauce and spiced onion salad (in a tortilla):

Please note that I have adjusted these spice quantities to suit "my flavor requirement". The original recipe didn't use anywhere as much as I prefer---I actually doubled it across the board. You can adjust these quantities to suit your taste.

Get 4 large tortillas. Get cooking oil spray (or just straight cooking oil if unavailable)

Fish quantity: 4 basa fillets (or use tilapia if basa is unavailable)

Spice mixture to coat fish:

2 tsp smoked paprika 2 tsp coriander 2 tsp cumin 2 tsp black pepper 1 tsp cayenne pepper 4 tsp extra virgin olive oil

Spiced onion salad:

2 cups thinly sliced white onion 2 tsp salt 8 tbsp chopped fresh parsley 8 tsp lemon juice 4 tsp extra virgin olive oil 1 tsp smoked paprika

Tahini Yogurt Sauce:

4 tbsp plain yogurt (1% or 2% fat) 3 tbsp tahini 2 tbsp lemon juice 4 tsp extra virgin olive oil 1 tsp ground cumin (I may be misstating quantity here---start at 1/4 tsp and increase until it suits taste) 5-10 dashes of tabasco sauce (keep sampling and add more to adjust to one's taste)

Onion Salad instructions:

Toss onion with salt. Let stand for 20 min. Rinse under cold water. Drain. Pressing to remove excess moisture. Toss with parsley, lemon juice, oil and smoked paprika.

Fish spice instruction: Mix the spices together. Add the oil to the spice mixture and then mix that. Then spread the spice-oil mixture onto both sides of the fish fillets.

Cook the spiced fish fillets in the frying pan as they are. If you have a griddle appliance, please use the griddle instead of the frying pan (as it will be a little easier because you can cook all the fillets simultaneously). Leave the residual spice and oil on the surface after cooking (don't clean it).

Put each cooked fish fillet on one large tortilla. Fold the tortilla over the fish fillet (enchilada-style). Spray the cooking oil spray onto the griddle/pan surface (or brush the straight cooking oil onto surface). Place the folded "fish-tortilla" onto the surface. Brown each side of the folded "fish-tortilla". If you are using a "folding griddle", then fold the griddle to brown both sides simultaneously.

Peel off one side of the "browned tortilla" to expose one side of the fish. Add the yogurt-tahini sauce on top of the fish surface. Then add the spiced onion mixture on top of that. Close the "browned tortilla" (so it looks like an enchilada).

You're done! Enjoy!

Bagel-less Cucumber Bites!

*1 large English seedless cucumber *8 oz softened cream cheese *3 tablespoons capers with liquid *1/4 red onion – shaved into paper thin slices *3-4 oz cold smoked salmon *Everything Bagel seasoning

More photos and recipes here!

Peel away strips of cucumber skin, leaving even amounts between. This step is optional but makes for a nice presentation.

Slice cucumber into 1/4 inch slices, and lay flat, drying slightly with a clean paper towel. You’ll want to remove any liquid to have a good surface for cream cheese.

In a bullet blender, add cream cheese and capers with juice, blending until smooth. Remove and place into a piping bag, piping an even circle onto each cucumber slice.

Top cucumber bites with smoked salmon, paper-thin slices of red onion, and bagel seasoning. Additional toppings could include scallions, crumbled bacon or dehydrated onions.

Lava Cakes better with eggs or not?

I want to make a chocolate lava cake similar to that from domino's. I found some recipes without an egg and found another with an egg. I don't know much about deserts so how would egg change the taste?

Looking for suggestions of rubs to flavor up my chicken breasts?

Chicken is a main stable in my diet. Typically I'll season it with generic "all-spice" then grill it up in a sauté pan. Overall it's rather disappointing. I've tried marinating the breasts overnight in Italian dressing and it came out dry.

I'm looking for some relatively simple rubs that will really amp up my chicken game.

Thanks!

STRAWBERRIES CAKE ROLL Recipe

Hello Today we are Giving you the STRAWBERRIES CAKE ROLL RECIPE!

INGREDIENTS:

9 egg whites, room temperature pinch of vanilla powder (or 1 teaspoon vanilla extract) 3/4 teaspoon cream of tartar 1 cup + 2 tablespoons granulated sugar 3/4 cup cake flour

powdered sugar, for sprinkling

For the strawberries and cream filling: 2 cups heavy cream, cold 6 tablespoons powdered (confectioners) sugar, sifted pinch of vanilla powder (or 1 teaspoon vanilla extract) 2 cups diced strawberries

DIRECTIONS:

Preheat oven to 350 degrees F. Spray a 10x15 inch jelly roll pan with non-stick cooking spray, line with parchment paper, then spray again. On a flat surface, lay down a clean kitchen towel and sprinkle with powdered sugar. Set aside.

In the bowl of a stand mixer fitted with a whisk attachment, or using an electric hand mixer, beat together egg whites, vanilla, and cream of tartar on medium speed until soft peaks form.

Increase speed to high and gradually add sugar, beating until all of the sugar is incorporated and stiff, glossy peaks form.

Remove bowl from the stand mixer and using a spoon, fold in the flour very slowly, 1/4 cup at a time.

Spoon the batter into prepared pan and evenly spread it out. Bake for 15-20 minutes or until golden brown and springs back when lightly touched. Cool in pan for 5 minutes.

Swiftly but carefully invert the cake onto the kitchen towel that has been sprinkled with powdered sugar. Gently peel off the parchment paper and discard. Then, starting at the short end, roll up the cake and the towel together. Set aside on a wire rack to cool completely.

In the meantime, prepare the strawberries and cream filling. In the bowl of a stand mixer fitted with a whisk attachment, or using an electric hand mixer, beat heavy cream on medium speed until it starts to thicken.

Add powdered sugar and vanilla and beat on medium-high speed until soft peaks form. Remove bowl from the stand mixer and fold in strawberries. Store the filling in the refrigerator until ready to use.

Once cake roll is completely cooled, carefully unroll. Evenly spread strawberries and cream filling over the surface of the roll (You'll only end up using about half of the filling). Then, slowly roll the cake up again and place seam-side down on a serving plate. Sprinkle with additional powdered sugar.

Serve immediately or cover in plastic wrap and store in the refrigerator until ready to eat

Time to Make Christmas Whiskey (infusion that takes a few weeks).

With Christmas about a month away, it's time to make Christmas whiskey. Here is what you'll need:

-A bottle of lower shelf whiskey- like Old Smugglers or Canada Club. Nothing too expensive but not too cheap either.

-Three to four sticks of cinnamon

-Tablespoon of honey

-One jalapeño (optional)

Open up the bottle of whiskey. Pour yourself two fingers to make room in the bottle.

Add all the ingredients and replace the lid securely.

Let the bottle sit unopened until the week of Christmas. During this waiting time, every couple of days, hold the bottle upside down until the cinnamon and honey fall down to the mouth of the bottle. Once this happens, turn the bottle right side up.

When the week of Christmas comes, open and enjoy neat.

Christmas lunch ideas? Picnic ideas.

Christmas in Australia tends to be hot. I’m considering doing a cold lunch with a difference. I’m aiming to pre-prepare as much as I can.

I want to do mini hampers for everyone. So far I have thought of including sliced ham, sharp cheese, small pots of mustards and pickles. I’m also going to do fresh bread rolls. Other possibilities include potted shrimp and scotch eggs.

What else might I consider? I am thinking of chicken portions, but I don’t know how I might present them. Salad?

What might I consider? I’d love your input!

Many thanks!

Yeast question..

If a recipe calls for instant yeast & I only have active dry yeast, do I use the same amount, but proof it before mixing with dry ingredients?

Recipes that require breaking down a whole chicken

Hey everyone! I’m looking to practice 2 skills of mine, namely breaking down a whole chicken and then using the carcass to make stock. All I need are recipes that use the chicken pieces. So reddit, what should I make?

My grandma's Texas sheetcake

I asked my grandma for this recipe to make for a party about a month ago, since it was one I loved as a kid. I don't bake very much and kind of winged the process since she didn't have it written down formally, but it turned out great. That said, any input on making the recipe clearer would be appreciated!

Cake - Ingredients:

  • 2 cups flour

  • 2 cups sugar

  • 1/2 tsp salt

  • 1 tsp baking soda

  • 1 1/2 tsp cinnamon

  • 2 sticks butter

  • 1 cup water

  • 4 tbsp cocoa powder

  • 2 eggs

  • 1 tsp vinegar

  • 1 tsp vanilla

  • 1/2 cup buttermilk

Cake - Directions:

  1. In a large bowl, mix flour, sugar, salt, baking soda, and cinnamon.

  2. Combine butter, water, and cocoa in a saucepan. Bring to a boil. Remove from heat and add to the dry stuff, mixing until smooth.

  3. Beat the eggs. Add the eggs, vinegar, vanilla, and buttermilk, and mix until smooth.

  4. Pour evenly into a 13x9 (ish) pan and bake at 375F for 20 minutes. Allow the cake to cool before adding the frosting.

Frosting - Ingredients:

  • 1 stick butter

  • 4 tbsp cocoa

  • 6 tbsp milk

  • 1 box powdered sugar (wasn't sure what this meant, I used 2 cups, internet seems to suggest 3-4)

  • 1 tsp vanilla

Frosting - Directions:

  1. Combine butter, cocoa, and milk in a saucepan and bring to a boil.

  2. Pour into a mixing bowl and mix in the vanilla. Gradually mix in the powdered sugar. Spread evenly over cake.
