Trying to many new recipes? Young family advice needed

My wife and I really enjoy cooking but have 2 kids under 3 years old. We've noticed that we're trying to have a different meal every single night and maybe not being very smart with using everything we have in the fridge/cupboard. That leads to us basically going to the store every night to pick up little things and is hurting our budget (we are saving for a big world trip and looking to cut costs).

I have two questions:

1) As you're going through recipes, how do you save them/plan them ahead of time to smart shop at the store?

2) What are some common foods that you always have on hand that go as a good "side dish" for main meals that don't get too repetitive?
