What's the best way to smoke meat in an oven?

I want to smoke a pork shoulder today, in the oven. I've tried before using the 'wet chips' method, which left a slight hickory taste but no real smoky taste. What was i doing wrong, or is there any better way to smoke a pork shoulder in the oven?
