This is my mom's recipe that she's been improving since I was a kid.
Pre-heat oven to 350
Filling
4-5 cups fruit (apples, berries, bananas)
1/4 to 1/3 cup sugar
3-5 Tbsp Chia seeds OR 2-3 Tbsp corn starch OR 4-6 Tbsp flour (I prefer using half chia & half corn starch - amount depends on juiciness)
1 Tbsp spiced rum or lemon juice (if need to add acidity)
1/3 cup dried fruit, cherries/raisins/dates/figs... (optional - good with apples but not needed for berries)
Topping:
1/2 cup butter
1/3 cup sugar
1 tsp lemon zest (optional)
1 cup pecans
1 cup walnuts
3/4 cup flour
1 tsp cinnamon
1/4 tsp mace or nutmeg
1 tsp salt
For filling mix sugar & thickener together adjusting these amounts based on the fruits sweetness and juiciness. Then add fruit and rum/lemon & put in 9" pie pan. Combine topping and spread on fruit mixture.
Bake 350 degrees approximately 35-40 minutes.
