I decided to try to curb my shawarma craving by making my own! Cooking is the only thing that's keeping me sane at this time so try it out and let me know what ya think!
I wanted to up the veggies in my diet so I used mushrooms in place of chicken or falafel (I just don't have this in my house)
Ingredients (just get enough for however many pitas you like, I've included roughly how much I used)
- 1 pita (Fancy Lebanese Bakery)
- 2 white mushrooms, diced
- handful of spinach, chopped
- 1/2 a tomato, diced
- 1/2 a red onion, diced
- pickles (I chopped up one garlic/dill pickle)
- hot peppers (any kind you like, however much for spice)
- cucumber, diced
- 1 tbsp plain yogurt
- 1 tbsp hummus
- 1 tbsp olive oil
Spices:
- Garlic powder
- Onion powder
- Cinnamon powder
- Paprika
- Salt
- Pepper
- 1 tbsp soy sauce
Directions:
- Make your own garlic sauce! I have no idea if this is a legit recipe but I just put a ton of garlic powder and a lil salt in my bowl of plain yogurt. Add stuff until it's seasoned to your taste.
- The good part starts here: Put olive oil in a pan and add mushrooms. I don't actually measure anything when I'm cooking so just put whatever you like for taste... I usually eyeball it. But add some garlic powder, onion powder, paprika, salt and pepper. Add a tbsp of soy sauce (I used Maggi) and just a dash of cinnamon. It tastes just like shawarma spice!)
- While that's cooking, open up your pita and have your vegetables aside and ready. Microwave the pita for 30 seconds.
- Put the pita on a plate and spread hummus on the inside. Add your chopped spinach, diced tomato, cucumber, pickles, hot peppers and onions. Your mushrooms should be done by now, so add those after the veggies.
- The best part: Add your garlic sauce inside this delightful lil pita.
- Stick that bad boy in a panini press and heat it again to get some grill marks on it.
- Eat & thank me later
